September Meeting
We had a really good time last night trying our hand at making porcelain clay pendants. Cleo took them home with her and will slowly dry them. When they are dry , Jane Dunsmore will fire them in her ceramic kiln for us. They should be back for the next meeting on October 12th. You should then be able to take them home and experiment with melting glass frit, powders, enamels, etc in your own beadmaking and fusing kilns. More about that at the October meeting when they come back!
We discussed have a workshop day (a Sat.) with Cleo in either November or March. I will contact Tim (just got his email) at the Delaplaine and ask him for dates when the room is available, room and equipment fees, etc. The deal is - they set the fee and we divide the cost among ourselves. We can accommodate as many folks as we want - up to us. I will ask for use of the room, use of the torches and oxygen - we provide all the other tools and glass we want to use. So I will work on this and get back to you and we can plan from there.
They are having a frame and book sale in the gift gallery at the Delaplaine. I was thinking that the frames would be good to use for display panels. The prices are great - $5, $10, $15 - depending on size. I don't think anyone had a chance to look last night but you might want to make time to stop by this week.
Mary reported on some things that are going on in Waterford and other parts of Virginia - Mary, please correct any mistakes I might have made from my notes:
- We let the summer get by and it is now too late to do anything for the October Waterford show but she will have information next time for "Christmas At The Mill" the first weekend in December.
- There is a new gallery in Hill High, VA. If you want to check it out, either call or email Nancy Byrd for more information. Mary is doing very well there and thinks she may be looking for more new artists. Consignment. 540-338-9324 or nancybbryd@earthlink
- (This one I didn't write down the location - yikes!) Also in Virginia - a gallery Mary is associated with is relocating. They will have good studio space but no equipment. They are looking for teachers. Fusers would have to bring their own kilns and lampworkers would have to work out something for torches, etc. But they are also interested in other things to be taught - kumihimo, bead weaving techniques, etc.
- This same location is going to be setting up a Gallery - it may be a co-op or a combination of co-op and consignment. Contact Mary is you want to get in on the ground floor - she is!!!
- New Gallery in Plains, VA - "Live the Artful Life" Linda Neel, owner. They, too, may be looking for new artists - contact Mary for more information
